Took a little break from editing the website. Or a long break – filled with dread at the idea of its upkeep, the time wasted maintaining instead of writing, thinking of new and clever things to post (and coming up short). There are A LOT of successful websites out there, and A LOT of discussion around why having one is important.
Here is a whole post dedicated to why author’s need a website, so I won’t belabor the point: https://simplewriting.org/9-reasons-writers-need-websites/
On my little (long) break, I’ve decided that I can use this website as more of a time-capsule of my own process. I am not going to set strict posting dates, or post about specific content. I am going to post things relevant to my own writing journey, so that if I ever want to see how (terrifying) it was, then I have a place to come back to.
I’ve done some writing-related things, and lots of reading. Instead of focusing on my one epic fantasy novel, I am also working on a smaller, more manageable YA Fantasy. It is more fun to practice with, and I’m loving the story so far, but I haven’t lost site of my other, more unruly, friends as well. I’ve submitted a story to the Writer’s of the Future contest (I highly recommend their FREE workshop as well – and will talk a lot about it later!). I wrote a comedy about a chiropractor for the NYCMidnight #ShortStoryChallenge2021 and it placed! I just entered round two and got to write a fairytale (that may or may not have devolved into an allegory for drug addiction). I finished an entire character arc draft for Crooked Faith (working title) and an entire plot outline (CANNOT WAIT TO TALK ABOUT OUTLINES) for my currently untitled novel. I’m thinking of throwing some short stories at some magazines with the hope of building a publishing background.
I’ve been busy learning and researching and reading. I’ve been kept accountable by my incredible writing support group (shout out ManuscriptManufacturing!) and have had the pleasure to be a part of their journeys as well. Maybe I’ll post about some of this stuff, maybe I won’t. And I love having the freedom (PRESSURE FREE) to decide.
Perhaps it will be important for me later in life to have a website in terms of marketing or for announcing book sales or events. But this kind of pressure is what sends me spiraling into a nice comfy hiatus, and so – for now – it is my canvas to throw all things at. Can’t wait to see where it goes!
